Department of Public Safety

ISU Police investigates all criminal offenses on campus. Officers have full power to detain, investigate and arrest. Under some circumstances, their authority extends beyond ISU’s physical boundaries by virtue of a mutual aid agreement with the City of Ames.

Officers follow up crime reports through investigative leads and by periodically reviewing reports of old crimes to determine if further action is possible. They receive assistance through computerized analysis and solvability factors. During investigations, they may issue summons, obtain search warrants or make arrests. Iowa State officers work closely with the Ames Police Department, the Story County Sheriff’s Department, the Story County Attorney’s Office and other community organizations to promote fairness in the criminal justice system. The department has regular contact with the State Division of Criminal Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. ISU’s Department of Public safety makes approximately 1,000 arrests each year.

Some offenses investigated by ISU Police are:

  • Sexual assault
  • Harassment
  • Theft
  • Burglary
  • Vandalism
  • Alcohol violations
