If you or someone you know has been the victim of a sexual assault, help is available.

Story County SART

Individuals can contact the Story County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). SART consists of specially trained professionals from ten agencies on campus and in the community who take a survivor-centered approach toward sexual assault. The team offers immediate and follow-up care, advocacy, counseling and criminal justice services 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. Translation services are available. When SART is contacted, team members respond to the location of the survivor. All options are explained thoroughly, and any decision to act rests solely with the survivor.

To Reach SART, call 515.292.5378 (29-ALERT). To find out more about SART and sexual assault, or to make a report online, visit the Story County Sexual Assault Response Team website at http://www.dps.iastate.edu/sart/

Sexual Abuse Information (http://www.savp.iastate.edu/abuse/info.html)

If an ISU employee learns of a sexual assault, please review the following information and obligations.

As a member of the Iowa State University community, you may be called upon to provide support to survivors of sexual assault and to refer them to professional resources. It is best if you can establish the context in which the survivor is speaking with you - is the survivor seeking assistance or advice, or is the survivor mentioning it from a factual perspective relating to work or class, such as a request not to respond to a certain topic or a need for accommodation in getting work done.

For a survivor seeking your assistance, or if the survivor otherwise informs you of a recent sexual assault, you should be prepared to discuss or identify the following areas with the survivor:

  1. Encourage the survivor to contact SART (Sexual Asssault Response Team) or ACCESS (Assault Care Center Extending Shelter and Support). These options can provide the survivor support, advocacy, and assistance in exploring counseling, medical, and legal options. If possible, offer the survivor the use of your phone and a private space to make the call.

  2. Encourage the survivor to obtain medical services to care for her/himself and to preserve evidence from the assault.

  3. Explain that no records or reports of sexual assault are kept in the survivor’s permanent academic or personnel records.

  4. Sexual asssault is a crime. Inform the survivor that it is ther choice to file a report with the police (ISU Police, Ames Police, or local law enforcement (if outside the Ames area)) and encourage them to do so. Remind the survivor that reporting the incident does not have to result in charges being filed, but can make sure the survivor’s options are preserved.

  5. Explain, however, you are required (under Clery Act, Violence-Free Campus policy and Title IX) to file an anonymous sexual assault report with ISU Police as soon as you can. A form you may use for doing that is located at htttp://www.dps.iastate.edu/sart/SARTonlinereport.htm. Please also explain to the survivor that by meeting your obligation to notify law enforcement that an assault has occurred, you are not revealing the survivor’s identity if that is not desired, or otherwise forcing the survivor to go to law enforcement if another option is preferred.

  6. If the survivor is a student, inform the survivor that it is their choice to report the assault to a Department of Residence or Dean of Students staff member for assistance.

  7. If appropriate, arrange for a follow-up time to talk with the survivor and offer support.

  8. Provide the survivor with written information about resources available. Information can be printed from the following web sites:
