While law does not necessarily require wearing a helmet, it does drastically reduce the likelihood of brain injury in the event of a crash. According to Iowa State Law, bicyclists are required to know and utilize hand signals (stop, left and right) as well as follow the same traffic signals that motorists are required to follow.
