Whether you are a student, faculty member, staff person or visitor at ISU, there may be times that you find yourself on campus late at night or in the wee hours of the morning. If walking to your car or residence hall room leaves you feeling a little uneasy, what can you do? Call 294-4428 and request an escort to your destination.
Although the ISU campus is relatively safe, not everyone feels completely safe walking alone late at night. That’s why DPS offers safety escorts to students, faculty, staff and visitors between the hours of 6 P.M. and 6 A.M. seven days per week except for official university closings. To obtain an escort, call 294-4444 and DPS personnel will assist you in getting to your campus destination. The Safety Escort Service operates only on university property and greek housing areas. It does not offer escorts off-campus. Escorts will be will walk or drive you to your destination.
How to use the Safety Escort Service
- Call 294-4444 and request an escort.
- Give your name, pickup location, destination, number in your party and the time the escort is desired.
- Be on the lookout for the Safety Escort. You will be met by a student who will show you a DPS issued picture ID. If it is not a walking escort, they will be driving a golf cart or an ISU marked vehicle. You will be told which type of escort will be provided.
To help the Safety Escort Service
- Be on time and ready for the escort.
- Call well in advance to help insure that an escort will be available.
- If you decide that an escort is not necessary, call back to cancel so the time can be given to someone else.
- Specify as much information about your location as possible.
- Traffic or inclement weather can delay your escort; please be patient and cooperative.
Safety Escort Service Rules
- Escorts will not be made to or from commercial locations off-campus.
- Escorts will not be made to groups of more than three (3) persons.
- Escorts will only be made to the destination. No “quick stops” are allowed.
- Escorts will NOT be provided to intoxicated persons.
The Safety Escort Service is not a taxi service but a program to enhance the safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors to Iowa State University who need to travel safely within the campus area. Please do not abuse the Safety Escort Service.
*The Safety Escort Service reserves the right to refuse escorts to persons who behave improperly during escorts, are abusive to escort personnel, or who abuse the service.
