Description of Story County SART
The Story County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), formed in 1997,
consists of specially trained professionals from nine agencies who provide
a community
coordinated response to sexual
assaults. Members of SART represent the fields of law enforcement, health
care, advocacy,
counseling, and prosecution. SART identifies barriers that keep sexual
assault survivors from seeking
services and works to overcome those barriers through its sensitive,
survivor-centered approach.
SART offers medical, legal, and emotional support for sexual assault
survivors, age 13 and older.
How SART Helps
When a survivor of sexual assault contacts a Story
County SART agency, a three-person team is
dispatched. This team consists of a sexual assault nurse examiner,
an advocate, and a law
enforcement officer. The nurse, advocate, and officer explain their
roles on the team and services they
are able to provide. Survivors decide which resources they want to
use and can decline to meet with
any professionals. In a sexual assault, choice was taken away from
the person sexually assaulted.
SART wants to give that choice back and will respect any decisions
made by a survivor.
