Iowa State University is committed to providing an environment free from the threat of unwelcome and unwanted sexual conduct. Sexual assault is a crime under state law. It is also a serious violation of the university’s disciplinary regulations, faculty standards, and university employee policies. The university will not tolerate sexually abusive behavior in any form. Individuals who engage in sexual misconduct will face appropriate disciplinary action.

It is a crime. Sexual assault and rape are criminal acts of violence. Victims are forced, coerced, or manipulated to engage in unwanted sexual activity. Both men and women are victims of sexual violence, although a woman is 10 times more likely than a man to be victimized. Often rapists know their victims nearly 85 percent of the time the perpetrator is not a stranger. On a campus, that figure rises to 90 percent. Most rapes or attempted rapes in college involve a boyfriend, ex-boyfriend, classmate, friend, acquaintance, or co-worker.

Sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes on campus. It is important to remember that sexual assault is a crime, and the victim is never to blame.
